Solar freezers in 12 African countries to generate income in rural areas

With 600 million Africans lacking access to electricity, Orange Energies was launched on the continent five years ago to facilitate access to clean energy through digital technology. Orange Energies offers stand-alone solar kits comprising a solar panel, battery, remote control via mobile (GSM) and accessories (light bulbs, fan, radio, television, etc.), with the option for customers to split the payment.

In 2023, Orange Energies continued to innovate through a strategic partnership signed with start-up Koolboks to bring freezing and refrigeration solutions to 12 African countries through a single piece of equipment. Koolboks freezers are equipped with solar panels and batteries. The equipment also includes LED bulbs and USB ports for recharging phones or tablets. This product enables families to light up their homes and earn extra income by opening local businesses, for example. In order to obtain it, households not connected to the electricity grid can use the Orange Energies pay-as-you-go digital platform.

We are the first telecom operator to sign an agreement of this scale to contribute to the development of income-generating activities (IGA) in rural areas through clean electrification solutions.
