The virtuous circle of the Rɘ
At Orange, we are developing the circular economy to mitigate the impact of our activities, as well as those of our suppliers and customers. Our approach is based on eco-design and extending the lifespan of mobile devices.
In 2021, for example, we launched OSCAR (Orange Sustainable & Circular Ambition for Recertification), an internal marketplace for the re-use of existing equipment from our infrastructures. When we recover equipment, we strive to redeploy the dismantled hardware to a country in which we are developing our networks. While purchasing accounts for 88% of scope 3 emissions – much larger in terms of emissions than scopes 1 and 2 – these initiatives enable us to continue our decarbonisation trajectory.
Building on these successes, we extended our Rɘ program to the entire Europe region in 2023 (with the exception of Spain) and successfully launched several awareness campaigns.
As part of our partnership with the 2023 Rugby World Cup and La Monnaie de Paris, 1,491 medals were made using 200,000 phones that we helped collect. This initiative was unveiled at the 2023 Rugby World Cup.
Finally, in 2024, we have launched the Circular Mobility offer for businesses wishing to reduce the environmental impact of their mobile phone fleets. This service reduces the carbon footprint of a phone by 26 to 40% per year. It will help to expand the virtuous circle even further. *This figure takes into account collections by African workshops financed by France.
